Our highly anticipated drop of Maison Margiela has now arrived instore & online, including one of Margiela's most enduring signature pieces, the Tabi.
First introduced in Maison Margiela's debut collection in 1989, the Margiela Tabi took initial inspiration from a traditional 15th century Japanese sock. Separating the big toe from the rest of the foot was said to promote balance and a clear mind using reflexology techniques.
Martin Margiela himself came across the sock on one of his trips to Tokyo.
"My memory went back to the day we went to Tokyo for the first time, when we saw street workers in their flat cotton Tabi shoes," he says, in the 2019 documentary Martin Margiela: In His Own Words. "I thought, OK, why shouldn’t I do a soft Tabi shoe but on a high heel? And then the idea was born."
The Margiela Tabi captures the avant-garde and insubordinate spirit of the Maison and exists as a heritage classic, continually explored through each collection.
Limited sizes of the Tabi in three different styles are available now instore & online at ZAMBESI.
